Sign of a Break-Away Sect

بسم الله المحد لله و صلاة و سلام على سيدنا نحمد و على آله و سلم تسليما

What constitutes a break-away sect? What are its signs and characteristics? There are many, but here I will quickly focus on one.

One of the major characteristics of a break-away sect is that they tend to focus on a particular aspect of a religion (ie details, secondary aspects) and as if it is a major, over-arching theme that defines the entire religion.

Case and Point: All Muslims believe in the Messiah, ‘Esa bin Maryam عليه السلام, and that another person named Imam Mahdi, will be his contemporary and both will come towards the very end of the time. However, this is an eschatological detail, not the central theme of the religion. But in the Ahmadiyya faith, this aspect is the single, central defining theme of the faith, such that even its website cites that they are:

In other words, in their declaration of being Muslims, they felt the need to simultaneously declare that particularity that separates them from the traditional, orthodox Muslim community.

Of course, all break-away sects also focus on the major aspects of their respective faiths. But, their insistence on a particular interpretation of a particular detail as the over-arching theme that is invariably divergent from the mainstream is a strong indication that they are a break-away sect.

Finally, such sects follow a common pattern. For the first few generations they are able to place special emphasis on their particular interpretation of the detail. After two or three generations the interpretation is retained, but adherents focus more on the major elements of the faith. After a few more generations the particular interpretation is completely de-emphasized except for cultural or social reasons, and shortly afterwards adherents are resorbed back into the original group.

May Allah guide us all to what is True

  1. Farhan if you really think all they focus on are eschologotical beliefs, then how come their official blog refuting this particular (and other websites) has now utterly forgotten about you guys, having already dealt with it, and focus on preaching to atheists and defending Islam (not once mentioning any Ahmadiyya-specific beliefs)?

How come the Majlis Sultan-ul-Qalam of UK, USA, and Canada only focus on spreading the message of the Qur’an, Mother Mary in the eyes of Muslims, how honour killing and terrorism is condemned by Islam, and again continously talking about the merits of the practises of ISLAM? Barely mentioning any Ahmadiyya-specific beliefs there either?

I think you need to stop worrying so much about Ahmadiyya. If we are falsehood, leave us to our falsehood and insha’Allah we will one day be wiped out from the face of the earth, as the Qur’an says falsehood never lives but always perishes (gist). Focus on your own Jihad, your own life, and perhaps get married.

Peace, from a brother is praying for you.

    • T, (I know your IP address!!)

Jazak Allahu khayr for your du’as. I DEFINITELY need them. May Allah bless you and honor you too, both in this life and the next.

I cannot speak on their motivations. I think their main opponent right now is Cult Girl Confessions, but they refuse to address it because its just “gossip”, despite the large volume of visitors is receives. Go figure.

But there is a steady stream of people leaving the Ahmadiyya faith. Yesteday, I spoke with my friend, (who I wrote to you about via Facebook) til about about 1am. He said in the past month or two 20-30 former Ahmadis have contacted him. Those are just the ones who took the time to speak to him. Imagine the numbers who haven’t! Most are young and they accept either Islam or Atheism, with few exceptions.

Now, obviously truth is not determined by numbers. That’s the Appeal to Majority fallacy, as you know. But I really truly do think Ahmadiyya is in a stage of stagnation and decline. But there will always be remnants of true believers in it. Rare that a break-away group ever completely vanishes.

The very fact that Ahmadi-specific beliefs are de-emphasized is exactly a sign I’m talking about. There will be a stage when people focus less on Ahmadiyya-stuff, and more just on Islam. Then, the Ahmadiyya-specific beliefs will just be vestigial or cultural, and finally gone and the descendants of current hardcore members will be resorbed back. Break-away sect beliefs are not easily maintained.

ouch & haha at the last comment 🙂

    • @ Abd

Ahmadiyyat has trapped in by brothers and sisters and their children. Thats like 30 people. I have a responsibility to them. I must tell them that the Mirza family only wants money. Ahmadiyyat is baseless and has been marketing itself as Islam for the past 100 years or so. Ahmadiyya is a 3-dollar bill, its a total fake.

When was the last time you went to a Khuddam Ijtema in the USA??? Have you noticed anything??? The kids dont care about religion at all. I know…I was once one of them. Only 1% even care about Ahmadiyyat, it was their grandfathers who were pulled into Ahmadiyyat thinking that it was a progressive movement that promoted education and morals.

Stop stealing money from poor people. Ahmadis are like Baptist preachers…they are only in it for the money.

    • the website you may be mentioning called art of misinformation, was set up specifcally to counter the ahmadiyya awareness campaign.
after a short while it gave up and started talking about mundane things, despite its forte being to combat the ahamdiyya exposition campaign.
      why?
well its not the first time.
it is an oft repeated pattern spanning decades.
ahmadis try to counter the argument of mainstream muslims, when they realise what they are up against, they close up shop and disappear from the debate.
I suggest you tell them to come back to the debate.
I am certain people like akber chaudhury or ak shaikh would debate your people anytime any place.

    • For a long time I have been pondering over the activities of Ahmadiyya cult and this is what I have to quote in relevance to what they are doing to Islam and Muslims:

      Surah Al-Baqarah (Verse 2:11):
When it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “Why, we only want to make peace!”

  2. The very fact that you called the coming of the Messiah a ‘detail’ or ‘interpretation’ shows how misguided you are…

20-30 people questioning their faith does not indicate stagnation. If you believe otherwise, you are living in a fool’s paradise. 🙂

    • Your entire conception of Islam, from day one, has been to teach you that Islam centrally revolves around the coming of the Messiah, ‘Esa bin Maryam عليه السلام. As such, to you, it is the absolute most central part of Islam. The very fact that you see the Messiah as more important than the mere water sitting on your desk and its relationship to Allah is a sign of your sectarian nature.

That’s 20-30 who took the time to find him and contact him. Imagine the number who did not. It troubles me that Ahmadiyya, like modern Christianity, is pushing people into atheism and secularism.

      • Ahmadiyyyat had pushed me into Atheism for a few years…

Luckily…I was able to salvage my deen. Nowadays..I reflect internally with Islam. When I was Ahmadi, I simply paid, prayed and obeyed. They had me trained like a robot. I didnt ask questions, I didnt think about the different flavors of Islam, I was sooo narrow-minded. Alhumdo-lillah, I am Muslim now.
